The Ministry of Health had to make crucial decisions in upgrading some health facilities to ensure the inclusion of nurse practitioners.

Health Minister Dr Ifereimi Waqainabete says this ensures diversification of roles for wider coverage of public health issues, of which the roles and understanding of nursing are key.

He says the ministry also intends to monitor progress in upgrading medical facilities so that Fijians receive quality health care.

“We are starting to be recognized as a Department of Health and Medical Services internationally because of how well we have recovered from COVID in terms of response and also the high vaccination rate we have.”

According to Waqainabete, for all countries to achieve Sustainable Development Goal 3 on health and well-being, the World Health Organization estimates that the world will need nine million more nurses and midwives. by 2030.
