Bill Gates meets health workers in Makueni County

Bill Gates, co-founder of Microsoft and co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, traveled to Makueni County to establish the impact of primary health care.

The billionaire, who was accompanied by Governor of Makueni Mutula Kilonzo Jnr, visited Makueni County Referral Hospital and Kathonzweni Tier 3 Hospital where he met with medical staff and community health volunteers who realize what they are doing.

In the recent past, Makueni County has recruited a number of Community Health Volunteers who have contributed to improved prenatal care and safer deliveries at county health facilities.

Health workers also described key actions taken to improve service delivery, monitor the procurement and distribution of health products, and ensure that facilities continue to provide immunization, especially for children in the area. .

Some of the services offered at the hospital are funded by Gates through USAID and the Bill and Melinda Foundation. However, Bill Gates did not address the media during his tour.

For his part, Governor Mutula praised county health officers for using data to manage health care and equipment.

The county shortened access to medical facilities for residents and introduced a system where health centers can reinvest money paid for services into running costs and needed upgrades.
